Artist Statement: Seuil Chung
I observe my physical and psychological desires and translate them into abstract ceramic objects. This formal abstraction is intended to provoke varied interpretations that shift with each viewer’s perspective. Furthermore, by grouping multiple works under a specific theme for exhibition, I construct narratives that question the boundaries between ethics and transgression, reason and madness, while reflecting on the underlying impulses of desires rooted in my personal experiences. For example, my recent solo exhibition, "I See Ghosts," draws on my Catholic upbringing to explore the human longing for faith and to depict my own inner conflict within that longing.
The process of developing the forms for my work often begins with drawing through meditation. Meditation allows me to reach deeper into my unconscious, and the sketches created in this state serve as blueprints for shaping the forms in clay. I primarily use hand-building techniques with coils and slabs, engaging directly with the clay to intuitively and sensually project my desires into objects. I also carefully balance and curate the tension between playfulness and provocation through shapes reminiscent of body parts and the use of unexpected titles.
