Half of a 15-1/2" round shelf designed for top-loading round kilns. Measures approximately 5/8" thick.
Pressed High Alumina kiln shelves are ideal for fast and high firings and exhibit exceptional durability to cone 11. Comparable to silicon carbide in strength but at a fraction of the cost. Pressed production of these shelves creates an extremely dense and strong shelf that resists warping. Offers extra protection against thermal shock due to rapid firing and cooling. The alumina content of these shelves is 11-12% higher than the cordierite shelves most commonly used by potters today. Great to use in Gas kilns. Not recommended for salt and wood firing. Also high alumina and corderite shelves are not recommended for raku firings due to extreme and uneven temperature. Please note: there is no warranty on refractories! There are many factors that can cause shelves to fail over which we have no control. It is the nature of the material. Other than shipping damages, no claims can be made on refractories.
The low-fire Cone 06 Metallic glazes are lead-free, but are NOT dinnerware safe due to the use of heavy metals such as copper and manganese. These glazes work best at Cone 05 with a generous 3 to 4 coat application - the thicker the better. 151, 152, and 153 fire out glossy whereas 154, 155, and 156 have a more matte finish.

Combine the North Star 18" Standard slab roller with a specially designed set of Table Toppers and you have the North Star PortaRoller. We designed the PortaRoller for ceramic arts teachers who are moving from classroom to classroom and for studio potters who need a fully functional slab roller but have limited space. Like the other North Star slab rollers, the PortaRoller has two rolls, much like the wringer of an old-fashioned washing machine. Both rolls have a small diamond pattern ("knurling") machined directly into the metal to grip the canvas. The bottom roll is turned by the handle, but cannot move vertically. As it turns, it drives the top roll through a train of gears. The upper roll both turns and can be adjusted up and down. The two rolls turning together pull slabs through easily, and the vertical adjustment of the top roll gives an easy-to-set and infinitely adjustable thickness from paper-thin to over 2 inches. A reference scale allows setting and repeating openings to within 1/100 of an inch. The design gives great flexibility in making slabs. Very thin, translucent porcelain slabs and thick, heavily textured architectural slabs are equally easy. A wide variety of other texturing materials and objects can be passed through the machine along with the clay. Slabs can be rolled either direction or reversed on all North Star machines.

Made from the same reliable formula as our regular high alumina shelves, these shelves are also rated for cone 10 but are 35% lighter. The extrusion process provides a kiln shelf with a core I-beam construction for strength and rigidity, but at a much lighter weight than regular kiln shelves.
These shelves are not round, but are cut multi sided to match the number of sides of your kiln. Available in 20" diameter full and half shelves for 23" diameter kilns, and 25.5" diameter half shelves for 28" diameter kilns, these shelves are still 3/4" thick so they will match your existing kiln furniture. Please note: there is no warranty on refractories! There are many factors that can cause shelves to fail over which we have no control. It is the nature of the material. Other than shipping damages, no claims can be made on refractories.

Bodies and rolls are made of cast and carefully machined high-strength special alloy aluminum. Gears are made of the strongest material available for this application, nylon or steel. Bushings are nylon and the remaining parts (except plastic gear covers and knobs) are machined steel. Table frames are 14-gauge steel. Tabletops are of moisture-resistant Medex with a melamine surface. Metal surfaces are zinc plated or coated with a durable powder coat finish. Virtually no maintenance is required, and the simplicity of the design ensures that any repair ever needed will be quick and easy.
