Silica shot, also known as silica sand, can be used as an additive to clay bodies instead of grog or in addition to it. Silica shot will reduce the firing shrinkage and warping of a piece. It may also be used under pieces in a kiln on the shelf to help the pieces move as they are firing and helping to prevent cracking.
For decades, we sourced our Silica from US Silica's Illinois Plant. As their prices skyrocketed, we inquired with other clay manufacturers and suppliers and found Short Mountain Silica in Tennessee and with the help of Kentucky Mudworks who connected us and vouched for us, we were able to switch our silica source. We take material source changes very seriously, and we compared the analyses of all our silica products and tested to ensure there would be no noticeable difference. The only thing you should notice is that the bag looks different.
PLEASE NOTE: if you purchase this in full bags, the bag will read "Play sand". This product is 100% pure silica It is very different than play sand sold and sourced in the midwest, (which contains a fair amount of limestone, and the particles are not uniform. This doesn't work in clay as lime pops in your bisque or glazeware are not something anyone really wants.) This product marked play sand performs the same as the product we got from US Silica that is marked as Shot.
