There are many unique features that distinguish North Star Shelf Trucks from all others. North Star uses a much larger, wider, stronger caster than any other manufacturer. Full 6 inch diameter American-made industrial ball bearing casters are rated at 300 pounds each (or 1,200 pounds) and roll easily, even over rough or contaminated floors. All four casters swivel for easy maneuvering and two have foot-operated parking brakes. Shelves are supported at each end by brackets of a unique design that simply drop into square holes spaced every 2 inches along the corner uprights. The spacing between shelves and the number of shelves is instantly adjustable without tools. All shelves except the bottom one, which rides directly on the base, can be placed at any level so there is never wasted space and conveniently slide in and out. For low pieces, such as tiles, the truck can hold as many as 22 shelves. This is the only such truck in the world engineered from ground up to ship by UPS for lowest freight cost and quickest shipping. The truck is made entirely of heavy 14-gauge steel with North Star's blue powder coat finish. Each truck comes with four pair of shelf brackets, which will yield five shelf levels (the base carries the fifth shelf). North Star shelves are simply 24" x 36" rectangles of 1/2" finished plywood. Those who need heavier shelves, some other configuration (such as two 12" x 36" shelves per level) or who want to save on shipping cost find it easy to make their own.

Combine the North Star 18" Standard slab roller with a specially designed set of Table Toppers and you have the North Star PortaRoller. We designed the PortaRoller for ceramic arts teachers who are moving from classroom to classroom and for studio potters who need a fully functional slab roller but have limited space. Like the other North Star slab rollers, the PortaRoller has two rolls, much like the wringer of an old-fashioned washing machine. Both rolls have a small diamond pattern ("knurling") machined directly into the metal to grip the canvas. The bottom roll is turned by the handle, but cannot move vertically. As it turns, it drives the top roll through a train of gears. The upper roll both turns and can be adjusted up and down. The two rolls turning together pull slabs through easily, and the vertical adjustment of the top roll gives an easy-to-set and infinitely adjustable thickness from paper-thin to over 2 inches. A reference scale allows setting and repeating openings to within 1/100 of an inch. The design gives great flexibility in making slabs. Very thin, translucent porcelain slabs and thick, heavily textured architectural slabs are equally easy. A wide variety of other texturing materials and objects can be passed through the machine along with the clay. Slabs can be rolled either direction or reversed on all North Star machines.

The Steve Tool is a texture application tool. It is a re-invention of the wheel designed specifically for clay. It doesn’t clog easy so you get lots of raw texture! Use the tool to apply texture to thrown or hand built work. View/download a 7 page how-to guide with step-by-step photos It works for hand building or sculpting as well as thrown pieces. One tool can be configured many ways for many different texture results. You receive in the same tool kit BOTH the gear style and spoke style texture disks. To use The Steve Tool, throw a cylinder. Scrape the side clean with a rib. Roll the texture wheels around the spinning cylinder & move slowly up the cylinder (or fast, your choice). For slab work (or breads) flatten out the material and roll on texture. After texture is applied, form the shape from only the inside of the cylinder. You’ll see how the texture becomes “part of the pottery” & not simply “applied texture” which is how texture looks when applied to a finished pot. You’ll see patterns mimic nature. The patterns add to the tactile feel of your pottery. Stretch the pottery until the walls get very thin & you’ll feel the texture come through to the inside of the pottery. You’ll be inspired to try other effects from texture work. Try filling in the texture with contrasting clay, then trim smooth at the leather hard stage. Try texture on thick or thin wall cylinders. The 4" extruder dies are made of 1/2" HDPE (High Density polyethylene). Which is extremely wear-resistant and completely non-contaminating. The top edge of the die cavity is beveled to compact the clay as it passes through, giving a crisp, more solid extrusion. In the hollow dies, there is a bevel on both the interior and exterior portions under each side of the bracket (which holds the center of the hollow dies) that helps the extrusion to "heal" after is has been cut apart by the bracket. This bracket fits into a slot machined into the top of the hollow die and is held in place by the barrel of the extruder. If a hollow die is mounted in place, the center part of the die is in exactly the right place and the wall thickness will automatically be even all the way around. In general, the walls of extrusions 3-1/2 inches OD or less are 1/4 inch thick, while larger pieces have 5/16 inch walls. Our Flexi-bats give a finished foot and a stamped impression on the pots bottom with no added effort or time! Because the bats create the pattern and the foot while you work, you spend zero to very minimal time trimming. The bats also help potters stay constant with the size of their foot. The foot on these bats are deep enough that the potter can still glaze the bottoms. Our Flexi-bats do not have the loud wobbling and shuffling noise that other bats have. Made from a foam material, they are absorbent and stretch around the wing nuts of your wheel and last for a generous amount of uses. The diameter of the foot is just shy of 3 and 1/3 inches, leaving room for your work to shrink and still have a good solid base size for a mug or smaller bowl. The square shape of the bat helps with optimal storage for your work. The inspiration for these bats came about when potter Chelsi Hanley was struggling to have the intricacy in her work that she desired, but didn't have the time or the ability to come back to the studio days later to trim and decorate. She was also looking for ways to add clean cut imagery to her work and utilize time she had outside the studio doing graphics work.
For when you really want to sink your teeth into your clay, grab all three small FANGS! Everyone’s clay is different. Some clays are fine, some are gritty.
