Orton Orton Standard Cones
Pyrometric cones measure heat-work (the effect of time and temperature). They are slender pyramids made from about 100 carefully controlled compositions. Each cone number is unique in measuring temperature within a small temperature range (less than 30°C). Cones measure the amount of heat absorbed over time. As the cone nears its maturing range, it softens and the tip begins to bend, drawn down by the influence of gravity.Standard, or Large cones are used as witness cones to monitor the firing and verify temperature uniformity. A cone pack is necessary to support the cones during firing. If you have a kiln sitter on your kiln, you should use Junior cones. Warning! Do not view cones above earthenware temperature with the naked eye as this may cause cataracts. View through welders goggles - sunglasses are not suitable as they filter out UV, but not the infra-red, which is the damaging wavelength in this case! The Ceramic Shop Mr. Mark's Wax ON!
NOTE: The wax resist is colored with a pink or purple tint (that burns out completely), but the actual shade varies by batch. Recently we were sent a sample of the Mr. Mark’s Wax On. We enjoyed testing this wax resist and found it to be excellent for precision application on bisque fired ware. The light purple color, which completely burns out, makes it easy to see as you are applying it. The wax brushes on smoothly and dries quickly – about 5 minutes! The special hardening agent in this wax also ensures that any glaze that drips over onto the wax will wipe off easily with a wet sponge. Mr. Mark’s Wax On also works exceptionally well for the “Wax and Wipe” technique on leather-hard or bone dry clay. Apply the wax directly onto your un-bisque fired piece, (I tested it on both a fresh slab and on a bone dry piece), allow it to dry, then use a sponge to remove the clay from the bare places. The wax seals over the clay underneath it, leaving those areas raised. After bisque-firing, you’re left with a nice embossed (or debossed) texture. Mr. Marks’ Wax ON is a wax resist product that contains a special hardener that quickly sets the wax. It was created to eliminate problematic dripping and tacky surfaces when applying wax. Now you can decorate with wax during glazing without worrying about pesky smudges and sticky fingers. It is ideal for creating detailed, precise surface decoration on bisqueware and can be applied with either a brush or slip applicator. The pink/purple color allows you to easily visualize where wax is applied. However, the color burns out in the firing, just like regular wax. Wax ON should be stored at room temperature and mixed well before use. Brushes and tools used for application of Wax ON should be washed after use.

Laguna Darvan #811
Darvan is a deflocculant and used to disperse ceramic suspensions to minimize their water content. It is a liquid alternative to the long popular sodium silicate. About twice as much is required typically (0.4-0.5%) however Darvan does offer a number of advantages. Typically soda ash is not needed as a complement and Darvan does not attack plaster molds. In addition slurries are much less sensitive to over deflocculation and are more stable. It is thus easier to reprocess scrap. However a number of engineers still prefer using a sodium silicate:soda ash mix to control thixotropic properties better, especially if little scrap is being added. Darvan 811 is a low molecular weight short chain polymer for use in vitreous and semivitreous bodies and glazes. In comparison to the conventional soda ash-sodium silicate system, these polyelectrolytes produce slips with longer casting range, higher solids content, improved viscosity stability, fewer "soda" or "hard spots", and significantly increased mold life. Slips also tend to reclaim better without the need for constant adjustments with more deflocculant. The active agent in Darvan is polyacrylic acid. Its molecules are negatively charged along their length. They attach to clay particles and cause them to repel each other. There are two cautions with this material: -It has a shelf life of two years -Some types cannot go below 40 degrees F without detrimental effects on their performance. Darvan definitely cannot be frozen. In either of these cases, it will simply not disperse your slurry as expected.

The Ceramic Shop Hydro-Bat
The Hydro-Bat is made of Hydro-Stone, a USG product containing cement and crystalline silica, that is 8 to 10 times stronger then pottery plaster. The surface is scratch resistant yet absorbs water like plaster eliminating the need to cut your pieces off the bat with a wire. The Hydro-Bat was designed to fit on wheel heads that have bat pins spaced 10 inches apart on center. The hard rubber grommets cast into the underside of each Hydro-Bat will not swell or change shape and are sized to fit over a 3/8" diameter bat pin head. Due to their smaller diameter, the grommets under the 8.5 and 10" Hydro-Bat's are spaced 6" apart and require the HBA Adapter to convert standard 10 inch pins to 6 inches. This adapter is made of sturdy polyethelene plastic and fits snuggly over the 10" bat pins on your wheel head. It has two upfacing 3/8" diameter bat pins fused in at 6” apart. The 8.5" & 10" Hydro-Bats fit onto these pins. If you have a wheel head with pins positioned at 9" apart we make Adapter HB9A which will allow you to use our bats. If you don't have bat pins in your wheel, no problem, our product works great with a bat gripper or grabber which allows you to attach any kind of bat to a wheel head. Custom adapters can be made for any size wheel head or pin configuration. The smaller Hydro-Bats (8.5” and 10” diameter) are perfect for maximizing your space when you throw smaller forms, such as bowls or mugs; because the grommets on these bats is just 6” apart, there's an adapter to make sure that they will fit onto any wheel. The smallest Hydro-Bat measures just 6” in diameter, and requires the HB6A adapter, with grommets spaced 4’ apart. All of the adapters are made of sturdy polyethylene plastic, and will become a studio staple for you along with your Hydro-Bats! If you have a pottery wheel with no drilled bat pin holes, no problem! Many customers have used Hydro-Bats with a bat gripper with great success. **this item includes a $2 per Hydrobat surcharge for deliveries and shipments via UPS/USPS or freight companies to cover the extra packing material necessary for them to get to you safely. The surcharge is added to the shipping costs.

The Pottery Toolkit Mandala Texture Mats
These are high quality, hand pressed, natural rubber texture mats. You will not be disappointed with the quality of these texture mats. What really makes these texture mats stand out is that the mandala pattern itself is NOT recessed, or debossed, into the clay. The outline of the mandala is the part that is recessed/debossed. Hard to explain in words, super easy in pictures. See product photos to the left for details. It's a great effect that has been especially attention-grabbing for our early testers of these mandala texture mats.

AFTOSA Aftosa Wax Resist
Aftosa Wax Resist is used to resist glazes. It should be thinned with water to suit the potter's use. The wax is applied to the base and rims of the pieces before glazing. Allow the wax three to four hours to dry before glazing (some clean up with a sponge may be required) or before adding a second coat. Aftosa Wax Resist is also excellent for use in decorating pottery. Although Aftosa Wax Resist is tinted green so it is easy to see while you are working with it, the Wax Resist fires clear and the Black Wax Resist leaves a black line after being fired. The wax has a shelf life of 2-3 years. If used improperly, it can become contaminated. Always keep the lid tight on the original container. Pour a small amount in a separate container, use as desired, and dispose of the excess. Do NOT pour wax back into the original container. If the wax has a strong, sour odor, it has been contaminated. Clean up is easy with warm, soapy water. Please Note: The Wax will FREEZE in cold climates and will not resist effectively. If the wax has frozen, it will get lumpy and separate. Wax Resist will be sent to cold regions in the winter only at the customer's risk.

Refractory Products 21in High Alumina Kiln Shelf - 3/4 Thick
A 21" round shelf designed for top-loading round kilns. Measures approximately 5/8" thick. Pressed High Alumina kiln shelves are ideal for fast and high firings and exhibit exceptional durability to cone 11. Comparable to silicon carbide in strength but at a fraction of the cost. Pressed production of these shelves creates an extremely dense and strong shelf that resists warping. Offers extra protection against thermal shock due to rapid firing and cooling. The alumina content of these shelves is 11-12% higher than the cordierite shelves most commonly used by potters today. Great to use in Gas kilns. Not recommended for salt and wood firing. Also high alumina and corderite shelves are not recommended for raku firings due to extreme and uneven temperature. Please note: there is no warranty on refractories! There are many factors that can cause shelves to fail over which we have no control. It is the nature of the material. Other than shipping damages, no claims can be made on refractories.
